What we treat

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis

Irritation of the thumb tendons on the side of the wrist. Very common after childbirth and in manual work.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Compression of the median nerve: tingling in the fingers and weaker grip.

Wrist tendinitis

Overload of the wrist tendons from repeated movements or sport.

Thumb base arthritis

Wear at the base of the thumb that hurts when you pinch.

Our treatment

Ultrasound

We look at the tendon or nerve and compare it with your other hand.

Ease the pain

Manual therapy, high-intensity laser or EPI® depending on what we find.

Progressive loading

Strength exercises so the tendon can tolerate effort again.

Your daily life

Changes to how you hold your baby, your workstation or your sport technique, and a splint only if needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is De Quervain’s tenosynovitis?

It is irritation of two thumb tendons as they pass through a tunnel at the wrist. It hurts on the thumb side when you turn your wrist or pinch, and it is very common in new parents because of how they hold the baby.

Will I need an injection or surgery?

Most cases improve with physiotherapy and load changes. If it does not respond, we discuss other options with the team’s orthopaedic surgeon.

Should I wear a splint?

It can help for a few days or at night to ease the pain, but long immobilisation is not a good idea. We tell you when to use it and when to stop.

Is tingling in my fingers carpal tunnel?

It can be, but it can also come from the neck. In the assessment we examine both so we treat the right source.
